Maple Ridge, BC
Location: East of Coquitlam and north of the Fraser River, about 35 kilometres (21 miles) from Vancouver.
Travel Time: About 45 minutes by automobile via the Lougheed Highway.
Climate: Same as Vancouver.
Economy: Maple Ridge is only in recent years becoming a bedroom community to Vancouver as city development continues and transportation routes are improved for commuters. Traditionally, however, Maple Ridge has been an agricultural area, with berry growing providing the major crop. The numerous riding stables prompts a local claim to the `Horse Capital of British Columbia.' A few small sawmills and wood remanufacturing firms provide local employment.
To do: Maple Ridge is close enough to reach the urban amenities of Vancouver for an evening or take advantage of its proximity to wilderness areas like Golden Ears Provincial Park and Alouette Lake immediately to its north.
